Microsoft Could Return to the Smartphone Market with a 360-Degree Foldable Device. |
It looks like Microsoft might be working on a new foldable smartphone that opens up to a full 360 degrees! According to MSPoweruser, a patent for this concept has been spotted at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Interestingly, a similar patent was filed by Microsoft back in 2021.
This new 38-page document describes a device that can transform into different forms, like a tablet, laptop, or other gadgets.
What makes it unique is its special grooves, allowing the display to bend smoothly without creating any creases, and it can fold in multiple directions.

The images from the patent show that this smartphone could fold at angles of 180, 300, and even 360 degrees, locking into place at each of these positions.
Most foldable phones on the market today only fold inward, so this feature would make Microsoft’s concept stand out.
However, it’s important to note that just because a company files a patent doesn’t mean the product will actually make it to the market. Many such ideas never get past the concept stage.
Microsoft has already dipped its toes in the smartphone world. In 2020, they launched the foldable Surface Duo, which cost $1,400 at the time.
The second generation followed in 2021, but despite rumors of a third version, the lineup was officially canceled two years later.
